I’ve been reading comments and listening to “Established Authors” complain about all the “self-published” books that are flooding the market at this time. The complaints are that there are too many poorly made books that cost less and are easier for consumers to purchase. The fault of this issue lies with large publishing companies.
Penguin Random House, for example, and other large publishers require New Writers to go through outlets such as Page Publishing, a self-publish off shoot of PRH, and other self-publish offices that require the WRITER to pay over $1000 to get started. New writers cannot afford to pay to be published.
We new writers publish books ourselves because it is budget friendly and our writing makes it’s way into the world… Where it Belongs! Also, the money we new authors pay to publishing companies, it’s just to make a book. There is no marketing, advertising or talks with bookstores. That’s another $5000-7000 we new authors have to pay.
I tried sending my manuscripts to publishing houses only to have them returned! An “advance” is no longer given to an author and manuscripts are not read, unless you’re “well connected”. New writers have to pay The Publisher first or the book has to already be published in order for the big Publishing House to even “consider” a book.
Before the turn of the millenia, Authors would send out manuscripts to be read by many different publishers, get rejected quite often but eventually find a publisher who would give them a “cash advance” on the book and publish the manuscript, market, advertise, etc. That is not how the publishing world works now.
ESTABLISHED AUTHORS, please help out new authors by asking your publishing houses, like Penguin Random House, to go back to traditional publishing. In turn, poorly made books will leave the market. We new authors need you to tell your publisher about changing their current established self-publish requirements and to stop forcing writers to shell out money in order to be published. Established Authors need to understand, Big House Publishers are the problem, not the new authors and writers.
