Just as I have been wondering if nice people exist anymore, I have been wondering if a pleasant Customer Service scenario exists? It’s not hard to say please and thank you, or even just smile.  I realize people have bad days, but I am not your dumping ground. Your friends and family are for that. Or even a rant on social media.  However, if you are in retail, customer service associate, or a large call center like Farmers Insurance (my job) as I was for over 30 years, your smile must be there.  Whether in person or in your voice.  It takes little effort to be pleasant.

Earlier this evening, I let a gentleman go ahead of me in line at Walgreens. He had one prescription he had been waiting for since I entered the store (about 20 minutes) that should have been ready but was not.  He had only his prescription.  I had a basket full. I had to wait THREE WHOLE MINUTES extra! NOT A BIG DEAL PEOPLE!!!  He left smiling, which he was not doing when I arrived.  He thanked me and told me happy holidays.  I turned his whole demeanor around with a simple act of kindness.  I had a smile on my face too.  The pharmacist noticed what I did and told me I was kind to do that.  Just look at this list.  All the GOOD that was done with just a simple gesture.  Now imagine if we humans all did one simple gesture each day. Let someone into traffic.  Let someone cross the parking lot in front of you.  Let someone else have the last item available.  Pay for the order or part of the order of the person behind you in the fast-food line.  Smile at a stranger. I rolled down my window and told a guy I liked his bike and asked where he got it.  I got an immediate smile.

Try this out!  Try being nice to others around you.  We have been plagued as a nation with hate, racism and negative “quick quotes” that I feel we are losing faith in our nation.  A certain group, in particular, is spreading so much hate that even my neighbors are starting to become complacent. I do not want to see our nation brought down by one Man and his group of racist and hateful followers. We have systems in our government that work as they should, and we need to get back to believing in that promise and stop all the hate.  Pledge allegiance to our flag again. If you’re an American reading this, be happy for your freedoms.  We could be living under someone like Putin.
